Carved giltwood cherubs and putti were widely used during the Baroque and Rococo periods to adorn ecclesiastical interiors, grand mirrors, and architectural woodwork, symbolising divine presence and artistic opulence.

Authentic pieces are typically hand-carved from softwoods like lime or pine, then coated with layers of gesso before being water-gilded or oil-gilded with genuine gold leaf.

Authentic period pieces display natural ageing such as fine craquelure in the gesso, subtle wear revealing the red bole underneath, and tool marks consistent with hand-chiselling rather than resin casting.

These decorative elements can be mounted on walls as standalone sculptural art or placed atop a mantlepiece to introduce historical texture and metallic contrast to modern minimalist spaces.

Giltwood requires delicate care; dust gently with a dry, soft brush or microfiber cloth, avoiding all water, liquid cleaners, and abrasive materials that can strip the fragile gold leaf.
