A door porter is a heavy, freestanding weight designed to keep interior doors open, becoming popular during the Georgian and Victorian periods in large houses to prevent doors from slamming in draughty corridors.

Traditional door porters are typically constructed from a cast brass outer shell that is filled with lead or iron to provide the necessary weight needed to hold heavy doors in place.

Authentic pieces usually feature heavy sand-cast brass construction, a solid lead core, hand-finished detailing, and natural patination or wear consistent with age.

An antique door porter can be utilised functionally in a hallway or styled purely as a sculptural metal object on the floor near a heavy timber door or fireplace hearth.

Brass surfaces should be gently wiped with a soft, dry cloth to preserve their natural oxidisation and patina, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip historical character.
