Frog mugs, or surprise mugs, originated in Sunderland and Staffordshire during the mid-to-late 18th century. Designed primarily as novelty drinking vessels in taverns, they feature a modelled ceramic frog inside that appears as the drinker empties the liquid.

These mugs were typically produced from creamware or pearlware earthenware. They were finished with lead glazes and hand-painted using underglaze or overglaze oxides to produce distinct polychrome colours.

Authentic pieces from around 1800 often feature press-moulded relief details, slight firing imperfections, and underglaze palette tones such as cobalt blue, ochre, and green. They frequently lack maker marks or feature simple impressed numbers rather than modern stamped logos.
