Pair of Italian Marble Tazzas - 1900'S

1900 - 1920
Description

Here are two stunning marble pedestal dishes or Tazzas, that were possibly originally part of a clock garniture.

The colour and patterning of the marble is sublime with veins of red and orange coursing through silvery greys and greens - nature at her finest. Each dish sits upon a sounded column with gilded brass mounts, and has crossbanded detail, where the grain of the marble is accentuated.

Each pedestal stands on three brass feet and is 23cm high, the bowls measuring 13cm in diameter. There are a few nibbles to the rims, and a loss to the base of one ( all included in the photographs), but as you will see from the pictures are not particularly visible, and both display beautifully.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if I can provide any further information or photographs. I offer free postage to the UK, and can help with quotes for shipping abroad.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tazza is a wide, shallow dish raised on a central stem and pedestal foot, traditionally crafted from stone, glass, or metal. Originating in antiquity and revived during the Renaissance, marble tazzas became popular Grand Tour decorative pieces throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Craftsmen turned variegated marbles, alabaster, or onyx on specialized lathes to shape the shallow bowl, turned stem, and circular foot. The individual stone components were subsequently joined using central internal threaded brass or iron rods and hand polished to a smooth finish.

Authentic period examples feature faint lathe marks, natural geological variations within the stone, and subtle asymmetry from hand finishing. Older pieces frequently demonstrate light surface wear around the rim, faint internal veining fractures, or traditional internal brass fittings.

Position a symmetrical pair on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or console table to establish visual anchor points. They serve effectively as standalone sculptural objects or as catchall dishes for small items in an entryway setting.

Wipe marble surfaces gently using a soft, damp cloth and neutral pH soap, avoiding acidic or abrasive chemical cleaners that etch polished stone finishes. Dust crevices with a soft brush and dry thoroughly to prevent moisture retention.
