Imari porcelain is a traditional type of Japanese export porcelain originating from the town of Arita in Hizen province, shipped from the port of Imari. Production began in the early 17th century, heavily influencing both domestic use and European royal collections.

Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired white clay porcelain and decorated using an underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, gold, and secondary accent colours such as green or aubergine.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit characteristic weight, minor kiln imperfections, hand-ground foot rings, and a distinct palette featuring saturated cobalt blue and iron-red pigments applied over a slightly pitted glaze.

These pieces function as striking decorative accents when displayed on open shelving, coffee tables, or sideboards, providing a rich infusion of heritage colour and geometric pattern to neutral spaces.

Antique ceramics should be hand-washed gently in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing brushes, chemical solvents, or dishwashers to protect the delicate overglaze enamel and gilding.
