Description

A scarce example of a Mid 19th Century Antique Victorian Gaudy Welsh Footed Bowl of large size, decorated in "Pagoda" pattern, in a typical palette of Iron Red, Cobalt Blue and Green. The body and foot both well moulded, the bowl attractively painted both inside and out and, other than for a faint star hairline to the underside of the base and some minor paint losses consistent with everyday use, the whole in good condition, with no cracks, chips or restoration. For comparable examples, cf. South, "Gaudy Welsh ~ A Visual Reference Book ~ Vol. I ~ 1997"

Gaudy Welsh is a style of hand-decorated earthenware produced primarily in South Wales and Staffordshire between 1820 and 1860. It is defined by vivid hand-painted patterns using underglaze cobalt blue, copper lustre, green, and red enamel colours, often inspired by Japanese Imari motifs.

Victorian footed bowls were generally slip-cast or wheel-thrown in lead-glazed earthenware or ironstone china. The base pedestal was formed separately and attached to the main body before firing, followed by underglaze cobalt painting, firing, and subsequent overglaze enamel and lustre decoration.
