This nest of four graduated rosewood tables from 1910 follows a Chinese Qing style. The timber has a deep reddish brown colour with a polished finish, showing floating panel tops, carved openwork aprons, and humpback stretchers on straight legs terminating in small bracket feet. Each table fits neatly beneath the next largest one, scaling down from the largest piece measuring 74 cm high, 52 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this set works effectively as end-of-a-sofa tables in a gentleman's library or living room, where the individual surfaces can be separated for serving drinks or displaying books and decorative objects when needed, then stored compactly together.

Nesting tables made from rosewood originated as practical space-saving furniture during the Qing Dynasty in China and became highly sought after in Western markets as export furniture during the nineteenth century.

These tables are constructed from dense hardwoods like rosewood or hongmu using traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints without metal fasteners, often featuring floating wood panel tops to accommodate humidity changes.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved openwork aprons, substantial weight due to dense wood species, natural oxidation variations in the timber, and hand-fitted joinery visible on the underside.

They can be stacked neatly to serve as a single compact side table beside an armchair or separated throughout a living space to provide additional surfaces during gatherings.

Dust regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoid placing the timber near direct heat sources or radiators, and apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year.
