Description

A lovely decorative French pair of antique plaster caryatids, each scantily clad figure depicting ancient classical Greek females supporting Corinthian capitals standing on decorated bases, super original patination and form. Each neoclassical sculpture in aged plaster cast with horse hair constuction with some losses to the bases.

A caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or pillar. Originating in ancient Greek architecture, most famously on the Erechtheion at the Acropolis in Athens, the motif was widely revived during the Renaissance and French Neoclassical periods for both structural and decorative art.

Antique decorative caryatids were commonly cast in fibrous plaster or plaster of Paris using piece moulds. The interior was often reinforced with burlap scrim, wood, or iron armatures to provide structural stability for floor-standing pedestals.

Authentic period plaster displays evidence of age through surface patination, subtle cracking, and natural oxidisation of the paint or sealant layers. Older casts typically feature hand-applied plaster joins, heavy internal reinforcing materials, and slight surface irregularities from historical hand-finishing techniques.
