Edwardian Mahogany Overmantel

1900 - 1920
Description

A quite stunning and beautiful Edwardian overmantel made from solid mahogany. The frame is typical of the period with a slight Art Nouveau flavour to the design, whilst the silk on linen tapestry is anything but typical, with a red haired maiden smelling the scented roses whilst taking a stroll with a male lion. What a rare subject matter. Obviously kept out of direct sunlight such is the superb condition, with all the rich colours. A great decorative piece ready to enjoy.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian overmantel is a decorative timber or mirrored structure designed to sit or hang directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, originating from the early 20th century. These pieces often incorporated Arts and Crafts or Art Nouveau design details, featuring stylized motifs, scrolled pediments, and central textile, painting, or mirror panels.

Edwardian overmantels were typically constructed from polished hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut using traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Central panels frequently featured bevelled mirror glass, marquetry, or detailed silk and wool embroidery.

Authentic Edwardian overmantels feature design elements characteristic of the 1901 to 1910 period, including organic scrollwork, heart-shaped pierced cutouts, and geometric side accents. The timber exhibits natural age-related patina, hand-finished joinery, and historical panel backings.

Mount the overmantel centrally above a fireplace hearth or a modern sideboard to serve as a focal point. Balance the warm timber tones by surrounding it with neutral paint palettes, muted soft furnishings, and clean contemporary lines.

Dust the timber frame regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, applying natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the mahogany finish. Keep embroidered or textile insert panels away from direct light and moisture to prevent fading and fibre damage.
