Description

A beautiful 19th century antique walnut marquetry planter. The antique planter has a rectangular sloped top, with a gilded edge and ormolus to the corners. The top and sides have a marquetry inlay, in a delicate vine decoration. The top has a removable lid, which reveals a neat interior. The antique planter is raised on four cabriole legs. An extremely elegant piece of antique furniture.

CONDITION REPORT:

In good antique condition throughout with some signs of age. There is surface wear in places including age-related marks and scratches to the top (pictured), and minor chips to the veneer (pictured). One of the corners is missing an ormolu (pictured). The antique planter remains structurally solid and sound. Overall, a neat example.

A French Rococo jardiniere table is an ornamental occasional table designed to house indoor plants or floral arrangements, popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries. Characterised by sinuous cabriole legs, marquetry inlay, and gilt-metal mounts, these pieces feature a removable top lid revealing an internal metal-lined trough.

Historically, marquetry planters were constructed using a hardwood core veneered with decorative timber species such as burr walnut, kingwood, or rosewood. The decorative surface patterns incorporate contrasting exotic wood inlays, complemented by cast brass or gilt-bronze (ormolu) corner mounts and rim mouldings.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut marquetry veneers with slight variations, hand-chased brass or bronze mounts, and hand-planed secondary woods like oak or pine inside drawers and frame understructures.
