Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of eighteenth-century French Provincial armoire doors comes in solid dark brown walnut with original iron metal fittings and an aged timber finish. Each door displays a classic French Chateau aesthetic with shaped arched fielded panels, raised timber mouldings, carved scroll cresting at the top centres, and keyhole escutcheons on the stiles. Visible details include dual-panel construction with vertical wood grain joins, exposed hand-carved scrollwork, and panelled borders that define the traditional design. Each individual panel measures 152.5 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep. Buyers repurpose architectural elements like these panels in modern interiors as wall art, headboards, decorative room dividers, or custom joinery inserts within fitted furniture projects. The substantial wooden construction and authentic period patination suit traditional and transitional spaces seeking historical character.

FAQs

French armoire doors were traditionally crafted as the front enclosure for large freestanding wardrobes or linen presses in 18th and 19th-century France. They typically feature serpentine arched panels, raised mouldings, and hand-forged iron hardware emblematic of French Provincial cabinetry.

Regional cabinetmakers primarily utilised solid hardwoods such as walnut, oak, and fruitwood. The frames were assembled using traditional mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, while the fielded timber panels were hand-planed to fit inside routed channels.

Authentic period doors show clear evidence of hand-tooling, including uneven hand-planed reverse sides and hand-cut joinery. Look for original iron long hinges (fiches), historical surface wear around keyhole escutcheons, and natural timber contraction along the panel joints.

These salvaged doors are frequently repurposed into custom built-in wardrobes, fitted to modern alcove cupboards, or mounted on sliding barn-door tracks to create room dividers. They can also be hung directly on walls as decorative timber panelling or architectural focal points.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice per year to preserve the wood. Keep the doors away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent warping, cracking, or timber movement.
