Chinese Temple Figure - Late Ming Dynasty, 17th Century.

Description

Here is a late Ming dynasty carved wooden Chinese Temple figure, lacquered and polychromed and dating from the 17th Century.

The elder or deity is seated on his raised throne dressed in opulent robes with a serene smile, his hands gently resting in his lap. Wise and noble, the figure would have adorned an altar in a temple or a shrine in a private home.

The statue comes in the aged condition as seen - it is completely sound, but the surface wear is commensurate with the statue's significant age.

the figure stands approximately 20cm high, 10cm across and 8cm deep.
