Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This nineteenth-century Francoise Linke card table belongs to the Louis XVI Revival style and functions as an envelope games table. The piece is constructed from warm brown kingwood decorated with parquetry on the top, complemented by gilt bronze mounts, an ornate gilt bronze frieze, and square tapered legs. Visible details include intricate chased ormolu scrollwork, foliate bronze appliques on the frieze and corners, and decorative brass-toned mouldings bordering the edges. Practical dimensions are 74 cm high, 59 cm wide, and 59 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this table works well placed in an empty corner as a decorative accent or utilised in a living room, study, or drawing room as a functional surface. The folding mechanism allows the top to open for games or display purposes. The warm timber tones and gilded highlights integrate smoothly with classic or transitional interior schemes, providing a practical display surface while adding traditional French chateau character to a domestic space.

FAQs

An envelope card table is a French-designed gaming table equipped with four triangular hinged leaves on the top surface. These leaves flip outwards from the centre, rotating on a central pivot to double the usable surface area for card games.

High-grade French card tables from the late 19th century typically feature hardwood frames veneered with exotic timbers like kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood in parquetry patterns. They are accented with finely chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and lined with baize or felt playing surfaces.

Authentic pieces display heavy, hand-chased gilt-bronze mounts, precise parquetry veneering, and solid brass pivoting mechanisms. Stamping or signatures from prominent Parisian cabinetmakers, such as Francois Linke, are often located on the locks, mounts, or underside of the timber frame.

Position the closed card table against a wall or in an empty corner as an occasional console table. Decorate the top with a decorative vase or lamp, leaving sufficient clearance to extend the envelope leaves when using the table for entertaining.

Dust the timber and ormolu mounts regularly using a soft, dry cloth. Avoid applying harsh chemical metal polishes to gilt bronze, as this strips the original gilding; apply natural beeswax sparingly to the wood veneer to preserve the finish.
