This nineteenth-century French desk accessory takes the form of a cylindrical patinated bronze and ormolu encrier designed in the Empire style. The dark brown body carries a continuous classical relief frieze of figures pulling a chariot alongside winged cherubs holding wreaths, encircled by gilded bronze borders and a fluted ormolu base. The top surface holds two circular inkwell lids with small spherical finials, two small rings, and a rectangular tray. A central turned column handle rises from the middle, topped with a fruit and flower finial. Measuring 22 cm high and 15 cm wide, the piece sits upon an office desk in a gentleman's library to hold writing equipment.

An encrier is a French term for a desk inkstand, designed to hold ink pots, pens, and associated writing accessories. During the 19th century, French craftsmen constructed these items from patinated bronze and gilded metalwork, frequently incorporating classical relief friezes.

These desk accessories combine dark patinated bronze with cast ormolu or gilded bronze mounts to create tonal contrast. The interior sections historically housed porcelain or glass ink liners set within the cast structure.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-chased metalwork, distinct threaded assembly screws, and heavy cast metal construction. Natural age-related wear to the gilding on high points and detailed Neoclassical figural relief scenes are additional indicators.

Place the inkstand centrally on an executive office desk, a dark wood console table, or a library shelf beside bound volumes to add historical structure and metalwork detail to the space.

Remove dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid liquid polish, chemical solvents, or abrasive tools, as these strip original gilding and alter the aged bronze patina.
