This 18th century French Directoire inkstand is a sarcophagus-form standish made from patinated bronze, ormolu, and ebonised wood in a black and gold colour scheme. The hinged lid carries classical figure appliques and a laurel wreath mount, while the body features an applied plaque inscribed A’LAMITIE, flanked by lion mask monopodia legs standing on a rectangular base with a foliate border and ribbed bun feet. The piece measures 15 cm high, 18.5 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. Inside, the fitted interior holds a silver inkwell and sander. This gentleman's library accessory suits an office desk as a decorative and functional desktop piece. The combination of patinated black surfaces and bright gilt bronze details creates a classic classical revival aesthetic typical of the period.

The Directoire style emerged in France between 1795 and 1799, reflecting a transition from Louis XVI Neoclassicism to the Empire period. It is characterised by restrained Greco-Roman classical motifs, post-revolutionary symbolism, patinated metal surfaces, and gilt-bronze accents.

High-end 18th-century inkstands were predominantly crafted using patinated bronze, cast brass, ebonised timber, and fire-gilded bronze, also known as ormolu. Internal compartments often housed glass or ceramic liners for ink and pounce.

Authentic period ormolu features mercury gilding, hand-chased surface details, and uneven wear pattern consistent with age. Original cast pieces display threaded rods, square hand-cut nuts, and evidence of tool marks on untrimmed reverse sides.

An antique inkstand serves as an architectural accent piece on an office desk, console table, or library shelf. It can be positioned alongside modern stationery, leather desk pads, or framed art to bridge historic and contemporary elements.

Dust surfaces using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent scratching fragile gilding. Avoid liquid polishes, water, or abrasive chemicals, as these strip historic patination and cause chemical oxidisation.
