FAQs

A footman was a metal stand placed in front of a fireplace to keep kettles or dishes warm before the advent of modern kitchen ranges.

These utility stands were typically constructed using a combination of wrought or cast iron for the structural frame and legs, paired with a brass plate top.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-forged joinery, casting flaws, period-appropriate patination, and wear consistent with age and exposure to open fire.

This type of metalwork stands well positioned beside a fireplace hearth or utilised as a low display platform for decorative objects.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patination, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to protect the metal surfaces.
