Marble Topped Rococo Console Table

19th century
Description

~ 19th Century ~

~~ Very good condition ~~

A beautiful carved and painted late Victorian Rococo console table with a Carrara marble top. It is beautifully carved in a hard wood, most likely mahogany, with bold scrolls and acanthus, and an arched stretcher with a flamboyant shell motif. It has a lovely aged painted finish in white and green with a hint of gold.

The marble top is serpentine shaped and the back is formed of intricately entwined and pierced acanthus. There are a couple of later metal brackets to fasten the table to your wall.

Condition is very good. The marble is good with no chips, there is some staining acquired over the years. The painted finish is very good with some very slight chips and some slight wear. The frame has some some very slight loosening to the joints, particularly the stretcher but is a good solid table.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This late Victorian Rococo console table originates from 1890 and is constructed from wood and marble with a painted finish in white, green, and a hint of gold. The piece stands 91 cm high, 115 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. The serpentine-shaped Carrara marble top rests upon a frame featuring bold scrolls, cabriole legs, C-scrolls, and an arched stretcher centering on a flamboyant shell motif, while the back displays intricately entwined and pierced acanthus. Additional visible details include acanthus leaf carving, metal brackets, and slight staining on the marble alongside minor wear to the painted surface. Suitable for use beside the front door or in an entrance hallway, this table provides a surface for display in a home today. The solid wooden frame exhibits slight loosening to the joints, particularly at the stretcher, while the marble top remains free of chips. The painted finish shows very slight chipping alongside age-related wear, and later metal brackets allow the piece to be fastened securely to a wall.

FAQs

Originating in 18th-century France during the reign of Louis XV, Rococo furniture is characterised by asymmetrical scrollwork, sweeping cabriole legs, rockery, and detailed acanthus leaf carvings.

These pieces were typically carved from hardwoods such as oak or lime, finished with painted gesso or gilding, and fitted with shaped marble slabs tailored to the contoured wooden framework.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved joinery underneath, natural irregularities in the marble edge grinding, and honest surface wear or fine crazing in the original painted or gilt finish.

Position the table as a focal point in an entry hallway or grand corridor, pairing the elaborate woodwork with simple contemporary artwork or an unadorned mirror to create balanced visual contrast.

Clean the marble top using pH-neutral marble cleaners to prevent etching, and dust the intricate carved wooden framework gently using a soft, natural-bristle brush.
