Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical design emerged in the mid-18th century as a revival of classical antiquity, drawing inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman architecture. It is characterised by symmetric proportions, clean geometric forms, tapered square or fluted columns, and decorative classical motifs such as laurel swags, rosettes, and acanthus leaves.

High-end 19th-century pedestals were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often enhanced with flame mahogany veneers. Decorative accents frequently featured cast gilt-bronze mounts, brass inlay, and solid marble tops.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of hand-craftsmanship, including hand-cut joinery, hand-planed timber, and natural wear to original gilt or polished surfaces. Look for cast bronze or brass fittings attached with period-appropriate screws or pins rather than modern modern fasteners.

A neoclassical pedestal serves as an architectural focal point in contemporary spaces when displaying a marble bust, ceramic vase, modern bronze sculpture, or trailing plant. Position it in an entryway, alcove, or beside a window to add verticality, classical proportion, and rich timber tones.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically to maintain the finish. Avoid silicone sprays and direct heat sources, and gently clean gilt-bronze mounts with a dry soft brush rather than abrasive chemical agents.
