FAQs

An 18th-century English delft charger is a large tin-glazed earthenware plate produced in workshops across England, heavily influenced by imported Chinese porcelain and Dutch delftware traditions.

These chargers were formed from local earthenware clay, coated with an opaque white tin-oxide glaze, and hand-painted with metallic oxide pigments before being fired in a kiln.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit irregular potting, stilt marks on the reverse from kiln furniture, crazing within the glaze, and hand-painted brushwork showing subtle tonal variations.

An antique charger can be mounted securely on a wall as a focal point or displayed on a specialist stand within a traditional or transitional living space.

Historic ceramics should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity, cleaned only with a dry or very lightly dampened microfibre cloth, and never immersed in water.
