An 18th century blue and white delft plate with a scallop edge, possibly the workshop of De Grieksche 1757-1765.

The plate is in pretty good condition with no cracks, just a few old chips and a loss commensurate with age, it also comes with its own brass hanger.

Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced primarily in the Netherlands and Great Britain during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Developed to emulate Chinese porcelain, it features cobalt blue hand-painted patterns on an opaque white glazed ground.

Delftware was formed from coarse earthenware clay and fired once to create a bisque body. It was then dipped in a liquid tin glaze, painted with metallic oxides such as cobalt, and fired a second time to fuse the glaze and decoration together.

Authentic pieces often exhibit minor glaze chipping, known as fritting, along the edges due to the brittle nature of tin glaze on earthenware. They typically show hand-painted variations, pinholes in the glaze, and unglazed support marks on the reverse side.

Place the plate on a wood stand atop a console table or sideboard to contrast against modern or traditional backdrops. Alternatively, hang it alongside other blue and white ceramics to create a structured wall display.
