This is a large, superb 18th-century Dutch Manganese and Ploychrome Delft Charger Plate dating from the 1770s.

The impressive and vibrant piece is decorated rim-to-rim with beautiful flowers, including a rare, central rose painted in manganese.

It is embellished with colours of manganese, ochre, yellow, green and blue.

Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced in and around Delft in the Netherlands from the 16th century onwards, developed to emulate fine Chinese porcelain using cobalt blue and polychrome metal oxide pigments.

These charger plates were formed from local clays, fired once to create earthenware, covered in an opaque white tin glaze, hand-painted with oxide pigments, and fired a second time at high temperatures using grand feu techniques.

Authentic 18th-century pieces typically exhibit a thick clay body, subtle glaze edge wear or fritting, pinholes on the surface, trivet marks on the reverse from kiln firing, and brushwork showing hand-painted variation.
