Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in classical antiquity and widely revived during the Regency period, torcheres were designed as tall, elevated stands to hold candelabra, oil lamps, or decorative sculpture. Decorative columns with simulated finishes allowed grand homes to display classical architectural forms without the weight or expense of solid marble.

These pedestals were typically constructed using slow-grown softwoods such as pine or lime wood. Artisans applied gesso, hand-carved details, and layered oil paints or glazes using specialised decorative techniques to recreate the veining and texture of natural marble.

Authentic Regency torcheres exhibit hand-carved construction, natural shrinkage along timber grain lines, and subtle crazing within the painted finish. Inspecting the underside often reveals hand-planed timber, historic square-headed nails, and authentic surface patination consistent with age.

A painted column stand creates a strong vertical focal point in modern interiors. Positioned in an empty corner or hallway alcove, it can be styled with a classical plaster bust, a contemporary bronze sculpture, or a trailing botanical arrangement to contrast historic architecture with modern decor.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. Avoid water, commercial chemical polishes, and solvent cleaners, as these can strip original paint layers or destabilise historical gesso.
