Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. FAQs

Papier-mache trays gained immense popularity during the Victorian era, particularly in industrial centres like Birmingham, England, where craftsmen developed durable techniques to mould paper pulp into functional household objects decorated with lacquer and gilt.

Authentic pieces are constructed from layered paper pulp mixed with glue and resin, compressed under heavy pressure, baked, and finished with multiple coats of dark japan lacquer, often accented with hand-painted motifs and mother-of-pearl inlay.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit genuine craquelure in the lacquer finish, hand-applied gold leaf or paint without modern synthetic pigments, and characteristic maker stamps or impressed marks on the underside from known 19th-century manufacturers.

Positioned vertically on a sturdy stand or mounted securely on a wall, these trays serve as dramatic focal points, or they can be placed horizontally on a low coffee table to create texture and contrast against contemporary furnishings.

Keep these items away from direct sunlight, excessive moisture, and heat sources, cleaning them only with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to protect the delicate lacquer and painted surface from degradation.
