This Kashmiri papier-mache decorative tray dates from 1900. It presents a circular form finished in a black lacquer ground, decorated with hand-painted miniature-style equestrian figures rendered in orange, green, and gold. The raised circular rim frames the maximalist surface pattern. Visible details include polychrome painting depicting riders and horses across the central field, alongside subtle surface wear consistent with age. This decorative tray measures 38 cm high by 38 cm wide, forming a compact round composition. In a contemporary home interior, this piece serves as a decorative display object placed upon a sideboard top. The detailed lacquer finish offers a visual focal point when positioned on a flat surface in living spaces or hallways. The construction material provides a lightweight yet rigid structure suited for surface placement rather than heavy everyday serving use.

Kashmiri papier-mache, known locally as Kar-i-Kalamdani, was introduced to Kashmir in the 14th century from Persia. The art form combined Central Asian miniaturist painting techniques with local Kashmiri craftsmanship to produce decorative household objects and desk accessories.

Traditional Kashmiri papier-mache relies on a base of soaked paper pulp mixed with straw or cloth, which is molded onto wooden or clay forms. Once dried, the surface is smoothed, coated with a white plaster layer, hand-painted using fine brushes, and sealed with layers of clear lacquer.

Authentic pieces feature lightweight construction, visible brushstrokes under a clear lacquer varnish, and detailed figurative or floral patterns typical of Persian miniature art. Older examples often display age-related craquelure, subtle surface wear, and natural hand-mixed pigment variations.

A painted lacquered tray can be displayed on a plate stand within a bookcase, laid flat on a sideboard to house smaller decorative objects, or mounted directly onto a focal wall as decorative artwork.

Clean papier-mache objects using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove dust. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and water exposure, as moisture can dissolve the underlying pulp and ruin the hand-painted lacquer finish.
