Empire Revival Mahogany and Ormolu Mounted Jardiniere

1900 - 1920
Description

Circa 1900, large Empire Revival mahogany and ormolu mounted circular jardiniere. With a brass lining, that was recently made to its exact specifications. The main body has 4 panels, with 2 large well cast lifting handles with acanthus leaves to the side and a carved cast flower head to the back plate, with a central drop section. This is held in the fielded panel with fine ormolu beading in a stylish pattern, and continues across the piece. The 2 panels without lifting handles have a large motif of flowers, and flowering fruit. Between each of the panels there is a cast upright in the form of a vase with swags and tails falling from the top down. The jardiniere stands on 4 legs, each of them in the form of a winged lion on a podium with a cast head, wings and mahogany body. It is shaped and curved and standing on a stylish animalistic foot. There is an inventory number on one of the facings ‘X954’. The jardiniere liner is removable and is water tight so can be used for flowers or as a wine cooler.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Empire Revival style emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reinterpreting early 19th-century French Empire design influenced by Napoleon Bonaparte. It incorporates classical Greco-Roman motifs, strict symmetry, rich mahogany timbers, and heavy gilt-bronze ormolu mounts depicting winged lions, laurels, and classical columns.

Antique French jardinieres of this period typically feature solid or veneered mahogany alongside chased gilt-bronze ormolu mounts. They frequently include a removable interior metal liner, often constructed from brass or zinc, designed to prevent water damage to the surrounding timber.

Authentic pieces display detailed hand-chased metalwork on cast bronze mounts, natural surface patination, and defined casting lines. The underlying timber exhibits historical joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, while the interior metal liner usually shows natural oxidisation consistent with age.

A classic ormolu jardiniere functions as a focal accent on a sideboard, console table, or within an entryway. It can be displayed empty to highlight the mahogany grain and bronze mounts, or used to house dried botanicals and architectural indoor plants kept within protective inner pots.

Timber surfaces should be dusted with a dry microfibre cloth and treated sparingly with neutral beeswax applied along the wood grain. Ormolu mounts must be kept free of abrasive chemical cleansers or metal polishes, using a soft brush to remove dust without disturbing the gilt surface.
