19th century

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French wall brackets from the Napoleon III period often feature high-contrast combinations of ebonised wood and finely cast gilt bronze (ormolu). Design elements frequently reference 17th- and 18th-century classical motifs, such as satyr masks, acanthus leaves, scrollwork, and brass stringing inlays.

These pieces were typically constructed from a dense hardwood carcass, coated in a deep black ebonised finish or veneer. Decorative mounts were created using mercury-gilded bronze (ormolu) that was hand-chased after casting to achieve intricate crispness in detail.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy gilt bronze mounts with fine tool marks from hand chasing on the relief surfaces. Look for foundry marks, maker signatures such as Henri Dasson, threaded steel or brass fixings on the reverse, and precise joinery along the wooden frame.

A decorative wall bracket can be mounted on a narrow accent wall, in an entry hall, or above a sideboard to display a small sculpture, vase, or bracket clock. Its dark finish and gilded details create an anchor point when placed against neutral or saturated paint backgrounds.

Dust the item regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a fine brush to clear crevices. Avoid chemical polishes, abrasive liquids, or solvents on the ormolu, as these can strip the historical gilding; clean wood sections with specialist beeswax polish applied sparingly.
