Late 18th/early 19thc Folk Art Wooden Childs Toy of a Calf

18th century
Description

A late 18th/early 19th century Folk Art wooden childs toy in the form of a recumbent calf, possibly Eastern European .

The calf would have originally had four wheels attached and a cord at the front to enable it to be pulled along.

The calf would have probably been made by a family member as it is in a very naive style and this adds to the character of the piece.

The calf is made from a hardwood, possibly teak although this is quite hard to identify due to the wonderful patina.

This is not only a great piece of treen but would also have been a very loved toy.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early European folk art wooden toys were typically hand-carved by local artisans or farmworkers using locally sourced timber. These items feature simplified, functional forms and naive detailing, reflecting rural life and domestic livestock.

Most early wooden animal toys were hand-chiselled from single blocks of wood and mounted onto rectangular plinths with drilled axle holes for wooden wheels or pull cords. Finishes usually consisted of basic natural waxes, stains, or hand-applied pigments.

Authentic early pieces display evidence of hand-tooling such as gouge marks, slight asymmetry, and natural age-related wear around handle points or wheel mounts. The wood exhibits deep patination, subtle timber shrinkage, and hand-drilled apertures.

Primitive wooden carvings add tactile texture and historical narrative when placed on open shelving, mantelpieces, or console tables. They integrate into rustic farmhouse, country house, or minimalist interiors as sculptural accent pieces.

Keep carved wooden objects away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent timber movement and cracking. Clean gently using a soft, dry brush and apply a microcrystalline wax polish sparingly to protect the historic patina.
