Pair of Antique Wire Work Planters

19th century
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

A recent find, we have a matching pair of English antique wire work planters, so very pleasing to find a pair of these highly decorative pieces that would look great in a courtyard, kitchen or garden room.

These sit nicely, are tall having been painted a long time ago and have true aging - fortunately both have the original metal trays, be it a little worn. Both have some lovely shaped wire work and are ready for placing with true aging.

A fine looking, seldom seen pair, from a country home in the Home Counties c1880 English.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Hand-wrapped wire joints: traditional method before modern electric spot-welding.
Interlaced arched gallery: decorative wirework favoured in late Victorian conservatories.
Multiple paint layers with deep surface rust: natural aging from garden or conservatory use.
Fitted sheet-metal trays: original drip liners with oxidisation and weathering.
Curled scroll feet: typical late 19th-century ironwork detailing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

A matching pair of English antique wire work planters in the Victorian Garden style, dating to 1880, constructed from wrought iron and wirework with an off-white painted finish. These tall pieces display true aging and wear, including worn original metal trays, along with detailed decorative elements such as lattice basket tops, circular side cross-bracing, lower mesh shelves, and scroll feet. Measuring Overall: Height 91.5 cm x Width 101 cm x Depth 40 cm at Base and 30 cm to Top; Inner Trays: Height 3 cm x Width 86 cm x Depth 20 cm; Lower Shelf: Height 10 cm x Width 63 cm x Depth 25 cm. Suitable for placement in a courtyard, kitchen, or garden room, these decorative items bring period character to interior or sheltered exterior spaces.

Wirework garden planters gained widespread popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, particularly within formal gardens and glasshouse conservatories. Artisans crafted intricate geometric and scroll patterns from iron wire, providing lightweight yet durable structures for displaying potted botanical arrangements.

These pieces were typically constructed from wrought iron or steel wire, hand-bent and joined with small rivets or wire bindings. The completed frames were usually painted in white, green, or dark metallic shades to withstand moisture and outdoor weather conditions.

Authentic period wirework features hand-formed wire joins, variable thickness in the metal structural elements, and genuine layers of historic paint displaying natural flaking or surface oxidisation. Modern reproductions often show uniform machine welds and synthetic powder coatings.

Wirework planters function effectively in sunrooms, conservatories, and hallways as elevated plant displays or console tables. Their open wire construction allows light to filter through, making them suitable for compact spaces requiring functional storage without visual bulk.

To preserve the existing patina while preventing further degradation, keep the metal clean using a dry microfibre brush. Applying a clear microcrystalline wax coating helps protect exposed metal areas from ambient moisture without altering the weathered painted surface.
