Cuban Mahogany

Swietenia mahagoni, the "Wood of Kings". Swietenia mahagoni is the wood that planked the ships of the Spanish Armada. Thomas Sheraton, Thomas Chippendale, and Duncan Phyfe chose Cuban Mahogany for their furniture. It has been among the most prized and valuable timbers since the late 16th century.. As its reputation grew, the supply of wood shrank.

As timber harvest methods became more sophisticated, the inaccessible trees became lumber. By the mid 1700's it was becoming scarce. By the mid 1800's good lumber was becoming rare. By the late 1800's the species had been logged into genetic impoverishment and commercial extinction.

Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

This George III extending dining table dates from the 19th century and incorporates solid Cuban flame mahogany. The timber exhibits a deep mahogany brown colour with a highly figured flame grain across the oval top, which features D-shaped ends and four removable leaves. The sectioned top rests upon six hand-carved, turned, and reeded tapering legs that terminate in brass and white porcelain cup castors. The polished finish reflects light evenly across the wide expanses of wood, while the mouldings define the perimeter of the top and the leaf joints. The piece measures 74 cm high, 457 cm wide, and 137.5 cm deep when fully extended. It provides seating for sixteen people and functions as a central furnishing in a formal dining room or a conference room for hosting large gatherings.

Early 19th-century George III dining tables are defined by classical proportions, high-density timbers such as Cuban mahogany, and modular extending mechanisms allowing variable seating capacities.

These tables typically feature solid mahogany or Cuban flame mahogany veneers, secondary timbers like pine or oak for internal framing, and solid brass castors.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut joinery, original brass leaf clips or runner systems, natural timber shrinkage, and historical wear around the feet and frieze.

Balance the substantial timber structure with neutral wall finishes, contemporary upholstered seating, and modern ceiling pendant lighting to anchor a dining room.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth, apply beeswax sparingly along the grain, and protect the polished timber finish from direct heat sources, sunlight, and liquid exposure.
