Antique Regency 14 Seater Extending Dining Table Figured Mahogany with 8 Reeded Legs

19th century
Description

This outstanding antique Regency extending dining table, crafted from beautifully figured solid mahogany, comfortably seats up to fourteen people and dates from 1830. Retaining all four original leaves, it effortlessly transforms from a compact dining table into an impressive full-length table whilst also separating into a superb pair of matching console tables, making it both elegant and exceptionally versatile.

The magnificent figured mahogany top displays rich flowing grain and a wonderful depth of colour across the entire surface. Raised on eight finely reeded tapering legs terminating in the original brass cup castors, the table is a classic example of Regency craftsmanship, combining refined proportions with practical functionality.

A particularly desirable feature is its ability to divide into two matching console tables, providing the perfect solution for everyday use before being reassembled for larger gatherings. The four original leaves fit beautifully, creating a seamless appearance with excellent colour consistency throughout. A rare opportunity to acquire an outstanding Regency dining table of exceptional quality that is equally suited to both period and contemporary interiors.

Condition Report: Presented in outstanding antique condition having been professionally restored and polished. The beautifully figured mahogany top has developed a rich, deep patina over almost two centuries, with only very minor marks consistent with age and careful use. It retains all four original leaves, the original brass cup castors and is strong, sturdy and ready for everyday use.

Regency extending dining tables originated in early 19th-century Britain, characterized by clean classical proportions, figured mahogany timbers, reeded legs, and telescoping extension mechanisms designed to seat large gatherings.

These tables were primarily constructed using solid and veneered mahogany, frequently featuring figured or flame mahogany on the top, solid oak or pine secondary woods for interior framing, and cast brass castors.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery, original brass clips or mechanical sliders for the additional leaves, hand-carved reeding on the legs, and genuine age-related oxidisation on the timber underside.

To modernise a traditional mahogany table, pair it with contemporary upholstered dining chairs, neutral linen table runners, and modern sculptural lighting overhead to create a balanced, eclectic aesthetic.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking and fading. Clean with a damp cloth, apply a quality beeswax polish twice yearly, and store additional leaves flat in a climate-controlled area.
