FAQs

British modernist dining tables from the 1930s are defined by clean geometric proportions, unadorned surfaces, and an emphasis on showcasing the natural timber grain. Designers focused on function and structural honesty, departing from heavy historical revival ornamentation.

Craftsmen primarily utilised native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, and mahogany. Solid oak was frequently chosen for its strength, durability, and prominent graining, often finished with clear polishes to enhance the woods surface tone.

Authentic pieces often feature makers paper labels, metal badges, or stamped marks underneath the tabletop or along the underside base frame. In addition, examine the joinery and structural features, such as geometric pedestal shapes and crisp timber edges.

A circular oak table functions well as a central focal point in a modern dining room when paired with contrasting contemporary seating. Positioning the table beneath a central pendant light highlights the geometry of the circular top and pedestal base.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the direction of the wood grain to preserve the timber finish, and protect the top from heat and spillages using mats.
