Antique Victorian Anglo-indian Carved Ebonised Occasional Table C.1890

19th century
Description

A late 19th century ebonised hardwood occasional table, the circular top profusely carved with a central quatrefoil enclosing starburst rosettes and radiating fan palmettes within concentric geometric borders, set over a carved and turned baluster column raised on a tripod base of downswept legs carved with rosette roundels and terminating in scrolled feet.

The exceptional density of the hand-carved relief across both the top and base elevates this piece into an object of striking sculptural presence, reflecting the height of late Victorian colonial workshop craftsmanship. With every surface decorated it makes the perfect freestanding accent placed beside an armchair or ideal as a lamp table where the light will accentuate the stunning carving.

Very good antique condition, with honest, attractive wear to the ebonised finish and a tight, stable historic shrinkage hairline to the solid top consistent with age. Structurally sound throughout, standing firm on its tripod base, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1890.

This Victorian Anglo-Indian occasional table originates from circa 1890. Constructed from ebonised hardwood in a black finish, the piece has a circular top decorated with intricate relief carvings, a turned central stem, and a tripod base featuring scrolled feet with rosette roundels. The visual details include a central quatrefoil enclosing starburst rosettes, radiating fan palmettes, concentric geometric borders, and a shrinkage hairline on the top. The table measures 56.5 cm high, 52 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this table functions as a practical accent piece positioned at the end of a sofa or serves as a compact lamp table where lighting highlights the carved surfaces. The item stands on a floor in a domestic setting.

Anglo-Indian furniture emerged during the British colonial presence in India, combining traditional European forms with intricate local carving techniques. Victorian-era pieces often display dense, relief-carved floral motifs and ebonised finishes adapted for Western domestic interiors.

These tables were typically crafted from dense regional hardwoods such as teak, rosewood, or padauk, which provided the structure required for detailed hand carving. A dark stain or ebonised finish was then applied to give the timber a uniform dark tone popular in late 19th-century decoration.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-executed relief carving with slight variations in depth and pattern, alongside traditional joinery techniques beneath the tabletop. The underside usually reveals hand-planed timber and signs of age consistent with late Victorian construction.

The rich texture and dark finish of an ebonised table allow it to act as a grounded accent piece beside contemporary seating or within an alcove. Pair it with lighter upholstered furniture and brass accents to highlight the detailed woodwork without overwhelming the space.

Dust the carved surfaces regularly using a soft, dry brush to prevent accumulation in the detailed recessed areas. Avoid water or harsh chemical cleaners, applying a high-quality clear microcrystalline wax sparingly to preserve the dark finish and protect the timber.
