Monumental Regency Rosewood Canterbury

19th century
For Sale by Carse Antiques
Description

Monumental size early 19th century Regency rosewood canterbury or magazine rack of very high quality (possibly Gillows of Lancaster). Small turned and carved legs with Barrons patent brass castors. Single drawer with cock beaded edge, original brass knob handles and cedar lined. The canterbury is finished all round so the back looks exactly the same as the front. Un-doubtablely the biggest canterbury I have ever seen. There are a couple of minor old repairs but nothing serious and it is a nice pleasing colour.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Named after the Archbishop of Canterbury in the late 18th century, a canterbury is a mobile wooden stand featuring slatted partitions designed to hold sheet music, periodicals, or bound volumes.

High-grade Regency canterburys were typically constructed from timbers such as rosewood and mahogany, featuring dovetailed base drawers, turned or carved spindles, and brass castors.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-dovetailed drawer joints, period-correct brass castors with original screws, fine timber veneers, and natural surface patination.

In contemporary interior schemes, a canterbury functions as a refined side unit adjacent to a sofa or armchair to display oversized art books, journals, or modern magazines.

To protect the timber, place the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying clear beeswax polish periodically.
