This Georgian artist table belongs to the 18th century and adopts a gentleman's library style. Constructed from mahogany with a warm brown finish, the piece features a ratcheted top that provides an adjustable slanted surface, accompanied by two pull-out side slides and a drawer fitted with a brass swan-neck handle. Supported by square straight legs, the frame incorporates a lower shelf positioned between the uprights, showing an even timber tone throughout. Measuring 85 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 38 cm deep, the table fits into an empty corner of a study or studio. The surface of the wood displays a polished dark brown grain with subtle variations in tone across the top and panels. The hardware consists of a curved brass pull handle with two mounting plates, contrasting with the warm brown timber of the single drawer front. Below the frieze, the structure stands on four plain upright posts joined near the base by a square lower shelf with slightly rounded corner junctions. Placed in a home today, this compact writing table serves as a functional workspace for sketching or reading, suitable for installation in a quiet reading nook or a creative workspace.

FAQs

A Georgian artist table is a functional piece of 18th-century furniture designed with a ratcheted or hinged top that elevates to support drawing, drafting, or reading, often featuring side slides for holding lamps or materials.

These tables were primarily crafted from dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany, featuring oak drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joints, and cast brass handles or fittings.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetail joinery in the drawers, period-correct brassware, and age-appropriate wear or oxidisation on the internal ratchet mechanisms.

An artist table functions well as a compact reading stand, tall side table, or accent piece in a study, hallway, or living space alongside contemporary furniture.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to modern heat sources.
