This early 20th century coffee table takes the form of a Chinese low altar table, rendered in a Chinoiserie style with a deep red lacquer finish. The top surface displays a hand-painted gilded landscape featuring traditional figures, pavilions, and bridges, complemented by subtle gold detailing along the frieze. Pierced corner spandrels accent the upper section of the legs, terminating in distinct horsehoof feet at the floor. The piece measures 38 cm in height, 100 cm in width, and 50 cm in depth. Positioned centrally in a reception room or library, the table serves as a functional surface for serving drinks or displaying books within an English Country House interior. The timber construction and lacquered finish offer a durable platform, while the low profile ensures it suits placement in front of a sofa or low seating group. Surface wear and craquelure are visible across the lacquered top, reflecting age and use.

FAQs

Chinoiserie refers to a European decorative style originating in the seventeenth century that interprets and imitates East Asian artistic traditions, characterized by lacquered finishes, pagoda motifs, natural landscapes, and gilded hand-painted decoration.

These tables are constructed with a timber core layered with multiple coats of natural or synthetic resin lacquer, often decorated with gold leaf or metallic gilt paint depicting detailed figurative or floral scenes.

Authentic period lacquer exhibits fine surface craquelure, subtle age-related wear to gilded highlights, hand-carved joinery underneath, and a noticeable depth from historic layering techniques rather than smooth modern spray finishes.

A red lacquer table serves as a strong accent piece when paired with neutral soft furnishings, contrasting upholstered sofas, and minimal contemporary accessories to let the detailed gilded surface remain the focal point.

Dust the surface regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth without harsh chemical cleaners, maintain stable indoor humidity levels, and keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading.
