This large Arts and Crafts table dates from 1890 and is constructed from solid oak with warm brown tones and contrasting ebonised wood details. The octagonal top displays a central inlaid rosette motif surrounded by geometric stringing, while the frieze includes carved apron ornamentation. A heavy carved four-column pedestal base supports the structure, terminating in carved feet. Signs of age appear across the wooden surfaces through natural grain variations and minor surface wear. Standing 75 cm high with a width and depth of 183 cm, the table provides generous surface space for a central dining or display area in a spacious traditional interior.

Originating in the late nineteenth century, the Arts and Crafts movement focused on traditional craftsmanship, simple forms, and visible joinery in reaction to industrial mass production. Furniture pieces often showcase natural timber grain, stylized geometric or floral inlays, and structural integrity.

These tables were primarily constructed from solid quarter-sawn oak, chosen for its durability and prominent grain figure. Decorative accents frequently featured contrasting ebonised wood stringing, bone, or fruitwood inlays alongside hand-carved friezes.

Look for heavy solid wood construction, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and hand-cut inlaid details such as geometric borders or central rosettes. Authentic period pieces often exhibit genuine surface patina and natural wear around the base and frieze.

An octagonal table functions well as a central focal point in a spacious dining room, entry hall, or library. Pairing the warm timber tones with contemporary upholstered seating creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern comfort.

Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth is recommended to preserve the finish. Applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year protects the timber, while coasters and placemats prevent moisture rings and heat damage.
