This early 19th-century Regency period music duet stand is constructed from rosewood with brass mounts and brass inlay. The dark brown timber displays a rich colour and patina, complemented by bright brass candle-arms, cast sconces, keepers, line inlay, and star motifs. The stand comprises a double-sided bookrest with X-framed slatted supports, a flat top platform, and canted angle music holders equipped with brass keepers and folding candle-arms. The adjustable-height mechanism is supported by a reeded tapering central column featuring a carved ring at the base, a gilt brass collar, and a screw-knob, rising from a concave-sided tripartite platform base fitted with original gilded brass castors. Measuring 105 cm high, 37 cm wide, and 45 cm deep, this practical piece functions as a dedicated music stand or reading lectern. It suits placement in an empty corner of a study, music room, or living room, providing adjustable double-sided presentation space and integrated lighting sconces for sheet music or books.

Originating in the early 19th century, Regency music duet stands were designed to accommodate two musicians reading sheet music simultaneously. They typically feature double-sided slatted or latticed desks, adjustable height mechanisms, and often include swivelling brass candle sconces for illumination.

High-quality Regency examples were crafted from exotic hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or satinwood. They frequently feature cast brass fittings, including sconces, candle nozzles, inlay strips, adjustment collars, and brass castors.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand craftsmanship, including irregular screw threads, natural patina on brass components, and hand-cut dovetails or joinery. Look for genuine rosewood grain patterns, weighted tripartite bases for stability, and original ratcheted or brass collet height adjustments.

A music duet stand functions well as a sculptural focal point in an empty corner, beside a grand piano, or within a dedicated reading nook. It can also be styled open with historical prints, books, or art displays.

Maintain rosewood surfaces by applying a high-grade beeswax polish annually and keeping the item away from direct sunlight or central heating radiators. Brass elements should be gently dusted and left with their natural aged patina rather than cleaned with abrasive metal polishes.
