Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century French Napoleon III jardiniere table functions as both a decorative planter and a side table. Made from ebonised wood and warm brown amboyna veneer, the oval piece includes a removable tray top fitted with a pierced brass gallery, twin brass handles, and intricate floral marquetry. Gilt-metal ormolu mounts accent the frieze and the cabriole legs, which connect via a shaped lower stretcher decorated with matching floral inlay. The structure stands 80 cm high, 58 cm wide, and 40 cm deep. Position this versatile table in a bay window, living room corner, or hallway to display floral arrangements or house plants. The compact proportions allow the furniture to fit neatly beside seating or in smaller spaces while providing a distinct French chateau aesthetic. The surface holds everyday decorative items securely within the raised gallery edge, whilst the ebonised finish contrasts against the lighter wood tones of the marquetry top and stretcher.

FAQs

Jardiniere tables emerged in France during the eighteenth century and gained significant popularity through the nineteenth century, particularly during the Second Empire and Louis XV revival periods. They were developed specifically for displaying indoor floral arrangements and botanicals within wealthy domestic interiors.

These tables traditionally combine decorative hardwood veneers, such as amboyna, kingwood, or rosewood, with ebonised timber structures. Construction routinely incorporates detailed marquetry inlays, cast brass or gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, and a pierced metal gallery around the upper rim.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-cut marquetry veneers, cast metal mounts with hand-chased surface details, and signs of age such as natural wood oxidisation or shrinkage gaps. Most functional original examples also include a removable top cover revealing a metal-lined liner tray for plants.

A jardiniere table functions effectively as an accent piece in a hallway, window bay, or living room corner. The top can be kept closed to serve as an occasional side table or opened to display contained houseplants, dried flowers, or decorative objects.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight, dampness, and direct heat sources to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Dust gently with a clean microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly, taking care to avoid harsh chemical cleaners on metal mounts.
