Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This circular coffee table dates from the 1930s and exemplifies the Chinoiserie style. The piece is constructed from wood with a terracotta red lacquered finish, complemented by extensive hand-painted oriental figures and flora across the top surface alongside gilt detailing. Four cabriole legs support the frame, each featuring carved elements picked out in gold paint and terminating in ball and claw feet. A narrow border runs around the perimeter of the circular top, enclosing the central painted scene. The table measures 40 cm high by 76 cm wide by 76 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this low table suits a central position in a sitting room or reception area, serving as a functional surface for drinks, books or decorative items. The compact height makes it particularly suitable for placement alongside low sofas or armchairs, while the distinctive painted top brings a decorative element to traditional or eclectic interiors. The durable lacquered surface provides practical everyday utility while maintaining the visual appeal of the period decoration.

FAQs

Chinoiserie refers to decorative arts created by European craftsmen inspired by East Asian artistic traditions, featuring motif designs such as pagodas, landscapes, figures, and stylized flora set against lacquered grounds.

Tables from this period typically feature timber frames coated in multiple layers of lacquer or paint, embellished with hand-applied pigments and gilding on cabriole legs or turned supports.

Period pieces feature hand-painted artwork displaying light brushwork variations, fine surface crazing within the lacquer finish, and traditional joinery techniques underneath the frame.

A lacquered Chinoiserie coffee table serves as a statement centrepiece when paired with neutral upholstery and simple modern forms to highlight the intricate decorative detail.

Wipe the lacquered surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical polishes or water saturation, and position the piece away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight.
