This late Victorian country house dinner gong in the English country house style comprises a rich brown oak frame supporting a large hand-hammered brass dish. The structure incorporates ring-turned uprights with rounded finials, a spindled top gallery, an arched upper frame, a lower cross-stretcher, and four shaped feet. A padded leather beater hangs from one side by a cord, while the circular gong is suspended from the upper rail to resonate freely when struck. The piece measures 110 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 37 cm deep overall, presenting a substantial yet practical scale for domestic placement. Positioned in an entrance hall or beside a front door, this decorative object introduces traditional character and acoustic function to a hallway or reception space. The combination of turned woodwork, decorative mouldings, and metallic elements suits period interiors and traditional country house schemes alike, serving as a functional timepiece or gathering signal within a home today.

A dinner gong is a decorative acoustic instrument used in large country houses during the 19th and early 20th centuries to announce meal times to residents and guests throughout the property.

These items are typically constructed with solid hardwood frames, such as oak or mahogany, supporting a hand-hammered brass or bronze central plate suspended by braided cord.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-turned timber components, natural surface patination or oxidisation on the metal dish, and traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints.

A standing gong functions as a focal architectural point when placed in an entryway, hallway, or adjacent to a dining area, introducing historic character to traditional or contemporary spaces.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and condition gently with natural beeswax; clean the brass dish sparingly with a soft cloth to preserve its original aged patina.
