A Very Attractive 19thc Elm Farmhouse/kitchen Table

19th century
Description

19th Century Elm Farmhouse Kitchen Table

A wonderfully honest 19th-century English farmhouse table, constructed principally in elm and retaining a particularly attractive, pale time-worn surface. Originally purchased by our client from Church Street Antiques in London.

The substantial rectangular top, measuring 197cm long × 77 cm wide, is formed from broad elm boards displaying the characteristic flowing grain, knots and natural variations associated with the timber. Generations of use have produced an exceptionally appealing surface, with gentle wear giving the table considerable character without detracting from its usefulness.

The top is raised on a simple, sturdy base with square-section legs and plain frieze, the restrained construction typical of practical country furniture made for everyday use rather than formal display. Small castors to the feet are a useful feature and appear to be later additions giving it good knee height at 62.5 cm.

Of particular appeal is the table’s long, relatively narrow proportion. At two metres in length and 77 cm deep, it provides a generous working or dining surface without dominating a room. It would work especially well as a farmhouse kitchen or dining table, but equally as a large preparation table, library table or informal centre table.

The pale, naturally worn elm gives it a relaxed appearance particularly suited to both traditional country interiors and more contemporary settings.

This nineteenth-century Victorian country farmhouse table is constructed from elm and iron with a warm honey brown finish. The rectangular multi-plank top has a natural grain, knots, and gentle wear, resting on a straight apron with square tapering legs and small metal castors. Measuring 75 cm high, 197 cm wide, and 77 cm deep, it provides a practical surface for a kitchen or dining room. Today, this rustic piece works well in a traditional home or a modern interior as an informal dining table, a food preparation workspace, a library table, or a central gathering spot. Its narrow proportions and pale, time-worn timber offer a relaxed appearance that suits everyday use while retaining its historical character.

Farmhouse kitchen tables from the 19th century were functional pieces constructed for food preparation and daily dining in rural households. They typically feature utilitarian lines, solid timber construction, and practical details such as straight or tapered legs.

Country farmhouse tables were generally crafted from regional hardwoods and softwoods, including elm, oak, pine, and beech. Tops frequently comprised thick planks joined with mortise and tenon craftsmanship, supported by heavy aprons and sturdy legs.

Authentic 19th-century elm displays a characteristic interlocking, wavy grain pattern across the timber surface. Structural indicators include hand-sawn markings, historical pegged joinery, natural wear around the lower legs, and original iron or brass castors.

Pairing a rustic timber table with modern dining chairs, such as minimalist metal or upholstered seating, creates visual contrast. Positioning contemporary pendant lighting overhead highlights the natural wood grain and texture.

Maintain the timber surface by regularly applying a natural beeswax polish along the grain. Clean liquid spills immediately using a damp cloth and avoid placing hot items directly onto the unvarnished wood.
