This large console table is an 18th-century piece executed in the Rococo style from giltwood and marble, displaying a gold finish alongside white marble. The structural composition comprises a serpentine white marble top with moulded edges, sitting atop a shaped, panelled, and fluted frieze decorated with egg and dart mouldings, flowerhead paterae, and acanthus leaf carvings. Below the frieze, floral swags and scrolling foliate extend downwards between four cabriole legs. These scrollwork legs feature scallop shell carvings at the knees and terminate in scroll feet, all connected near the base by a decorative scrolled X-form stretcher centred with a pierced shell motif surmounted by flowers. The piece measures 91 cm high, 199 cm wide, and 55.5 cm deep overall in practical terms for interior placement. In a contemporary home, this item finds a suitable position beside the front door or in a grand hallway as a statement surface for holding decorative objects.

Giltwood console tables from the 18th century were prominent decorative wall tables featuring hand-carved wooden frames covered in thin leaf gold, topped with shaped marble slabs, and designed to sit against grand hall or reception room walls.

These tables were typically constructed using carved hardwoods or softwoods such as lime, finished with water or oil gilding applied over a gesso base, and fitted with contoured marble tops.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, subtle oxidisation, and areas of natural gilding wear where the underlying clay bole or wood shows through over time.

A carved giltwood table serves as a structural focal point in an entryway or hallway, often positioned beneath a large wall mirror or flanked by minimalist wall sconces to balance traditional craftsmanship with modern design.

Maintain the marble surface with a neutral stone cleaner while avoiding acidic formulas, and dust the giltwood frame gently using a soft, dry brush to preserve delicate gold leafing.
