Originating in the mid-18th century during the reign of Louis XV, Rococo console tables are characterised by asymmetrical scrollwork, rocaille shell motifs, curved cabriole legs, and contoured marble tops. They were designed to sit against grand reception room walls.

These tables were typically hand-carved from hardwoods such as lime or oak, finished with clay bole and genuine gold leaf gilding, and surmounted by shaped slabs of native or imported veined marble.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved tool marks, pegged joinery, and natural wear patterns where the underlying red or yellow clay bole shows through worn gold leaf. The undersides of the marble top and wooden frame will show hand-planed irregularities.
