Pair of Regency Style Flame Mahogany Oval Side Tables

1900 - 1920
Description

A handsome pair of oval side tables in the Regency style, beautifully finished in richly figured flame mahogany veneers. Each table has a finely matched, radiating veneered top framed by a broad crossbanded border.

The shaped frieze incorporates a useful drawer, decorated with contrasting line inlay and fitted with two circular gilt-brass handles. Gilt-brass floral paterae divide the frieze, with a continuous decorative brass moulding applied around the lower edge.

Each table stands on four slender, gently swept and tapering legs terminating in brass-capped feet. The legs are united by gracefully arched cross-stretchers, centred by a decorative gilt-brass pineapple finial.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Regency style side tables dates to 1910 and is made from mahogany, flame mahogany veneer, and brass in a rich brown colour. Each oval piece has a flame mahogany veneered top, a single drawer with gilt-brass handles, brass rosette mounts, and a decorative brass moulding on the lower edge. The four slender, gently swept and tapering legs have brass-capped feet and are joined by an X-shaped stretcher with a pineapple finial. Each table measures 67 cm high, 71 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. In a modern home, these side tables work well placed at the end of a sofa in a living room or sitting area, offering practical surface space alongside a seating arrangement.

FAQs

Regency furniture, popular in early nineteenth-century Britain, is characterised by Neoclassical proportions, symmetrical forms, and decorative wood veneers such as mahogany and rosewood.

These tables typically feature flame mahogany veneers over solid timber frames, accentuated with cast brass hardware, beaded moulding, and ornamental metal mounts.

Period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, signs of natural timber shrinkage, original cast brass fittings, and historical wear patterns rather than modern machine production marks.

Place them symmetrically on either side of a tailored sofa, or utilise them as elegant bedside tables flanking an upholstered bed frame.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically, and keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to preserve the finish.
