This Regency style side table from 1850 is constructed from mahogany timber with a dark brown finish and a flame mahogany veneer top, measuring 71 cm high, 87 cm wide, and 54 cm deep. The piece comprises a rectangular top with twin folding flaps, supported underneath by carved, scrolled brackets, alongside a single drawer fitted into the frieze. The central column stands on four splayed legs decorated with carved details and terminated with brass claw feet. Practical for everyday use, the table provides an extendable surface for lamps, books, or drinks, making it suitable to place at the end of a sofa in a living room, study, or hallway. The folding flaps allow the table to adapt to different spatial requirements while offering concealed storage inside the drawer. The compact proportions suit traditional and period interiors.

FAQs

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding silicone-based sprays and direct placement near heat sources.

A drop-leaf table can be styled at the end of a modern sofa or in an entryway, serving as a functional accent piece that introduces warmth and contrasting wood tones against contemporary upholstery.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, secondary timber lining inside drawers such as oak or pine, slight irregularities from hand-planing, and genuine oxidisation on brass hardware.

Tables from this period typically feature Cuban or flame mahogany veneers over solid pine or oak frames, complemented by hand-cast brass claw feet, castors, and iron tilt-top or drop-leaf hinges.

Originating in the early 19th century, Regency drop-leaf side tables are characterised by classical proportions, high-grade mahogany veneers, drop-down flaps supported by flying brackets, and central pedestals mounted on quadruped legs.
