This early Victorian mahogany breakfast centre table combines nineteenth-century traditional furniture design with practical utility. The piece presents a circular top finished in a warm brown flame mahogany veneer arranged in a radial pattern, showing prominent natural grain figures that radiate from the centre. Below the top sits a sturdy carved pedestal supported by bold scrolling cabriole legs ending in scroll feet. Measuring 74 cm high, 130 cm wide, and 130 cm deep, the table suits placement as a striking centrepiece in a spacious entrance hall, living room, or dining space. The surface accommodates everyday household tasks or dining, while the tilt-top mechanism provides flexible storage options when the surface is not in use.

FAQs

A breakfast or centre table originated in the late Georgian and Victorian eras as a versatile central piece for morning meals or drawing rooms. The tilt-top mechanism permitted easy repositioning against a wall to optimize room space when entertaining.

Tables from this era frequently feature solid mahogany bases supporting tops veneered in sunburst or radial flame patterns over stable timber cores. Joinery typically incorporates heavy central pedestals, brass catch mechanisms, and hand-carved tripod legs.

Authentic period examples display age-appropriate wear on the brass tilt-latch, hand-carved detailing on the pedestal, and irregular saw marks on underside structural elements. Original timber patina and natural oxidisation inside joint crevices also indicate age.

Position the table in an entrance foyer or spacious living room to serve as an architectural anchor. Contrast the deep wood tones with minimalist contemporary ceramics, modern lighting, or neutral-toned foliage arrangements.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish occasionally along the wood grain. Avoid placement near direct heat sources, humidifiers, or direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and veneer damage.
