Carved rope-twist collar at the pillar base: typical Victorian detailing.
Concentric roundels carved on the plinth corners: distinctive mid-19th-century styling.
Divided drawer with baize-lined compartments: original fitted interior for sewing or games.

This Victorian centre table dates from 1860 in the English Country House style, rendered in dark brown mahogany with a smooth polished finish and natural wood grain. The rectangular top incorporates two drop-leaf flaps and a single frieze drawer, supported on a heavily turned central pedestal column. Below, a quadform plinth base rests upon four carved scroll feet with attached turned bun feet. The timber exhibits a warm reddish-brown hue with visible chatoyancy across the surfaces and mouldings along the table edge. Measuring 72.5 cm high, 59.5 cm wide and 102 cm deep, the table expands to 111 cm in width when both leaves are fully open. In a contemporary interior, this versatile piece functions well as a compact writing desk, a lamp table in a living room, or an occasional side table in a hallway or study.

A Victorian centre table is a freestanding table designed to sit in the middle of a room, foyer, or hallway. Popular during the 19th century, these tables were crafted to be viewed from all angles, featuring central support pedestals, decorative bases, and finely polished wood finishes.

19th-century pedestal tables were primarily constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut. Decorative elements often incorporated cut veneers, solid turned pillars, cast iron casters, and hand-carved feet.

Authentic period tables feature hand-cut joinery, irregular screw threads on original brass hardware, and heavy solid wood construction. Look for natural age oxidation on unpolished undersides and signs of authentic wear around the feet and pedestal joints.

Place the table centrally in an entrance hall or within a bay window as a focal point. The drop-leaf design allows flexibility, enabling it to function as a side table against a wall when folded or as a breakfast table when fully extended.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax paste once or twice a year to nourish the wood finish. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and sudden changes in humidity to prevent timber movement or cracking.
