Antique George III Mahogany Piecrust Tilt Top Dining Centre Table

18th century
Description

A superb quality antique George III mahogany piecrust tilt top dining centre table dating to circa 1780. The beautifully figured solid mahogany circular top has an elegant moulded piecrust edge and a rich warm colour, with the top tilting vertically when not in use.

The table is raised on a substantial turned central column with finely carved acanthus decoration above an impressive tripod base. The three sweeping cabriole legs are beautifully carved and terminate in claw and ball feet, giving the table excellent proportions and a strong sculptural presence.

Its generous 89 cm diameter makes this a particularly versatile piece. It works beautifully as a small four-seater dining table or breakfast table, while also being ideal as a centre table, occasional table or statement lamp table.

A very handsome example of late 18th century English cabinetmaking, combining practical design with excellent craftsmanship, strong proportions and beautifully carved detail.

Condition Report

This antique table is in excellent condition for its age, with minor marks and signs of use consistent with its circa 1780 date. It retains a wonderful rich colour and patina and the tilt top mechanism operates as intended.

A George III piecrust tilt-top table is an 18th-century style English table featuring a circular top with a raised, scalloped moulded edge reminiscent of a pie crust, mounted on a central pedestal with a tilting mechanism that allows it to be stored vertically when not in use.

These tables were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany, featuring hand-carved tripod legs, often with cabriole shaping and claw and ball feet, secured with a metal latch and wooden birdcage or block tilt mechanism.

Authentic period pieces typically display hand-sawn timber marks underneath, original brass latch hardware, natural patination on the mahogany, and hand-carved detailing on the feet and scalloped rim rather than modern machine-moulded edges.

Position the table in an entryway or formal sitting room as a focal point, paired with a contemporary floral arrangement or ceramic vase to balance classic period features with modern design elements.

Keep the mahogany table away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber movement or finish deterioration, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and apply beeswax periodically to maintain the surface.
