This late nineteenth-century French walnut drapers table, or drapière, embodies French provincial style in a warm brown timber. The rectangular top has a mitred frame surrounding a two-plank central panel above a frieze fitted with three drawers. The two outer drawers display round wooden knob handles, while the central drawer features a brass keyhole escutcheon. Below, the legs display turned decoration connected by low wooden stretchers resting on simple block feet. The piece stands 75 cm high, 200 cm wide, and 67 cm deep. In a modern home, this practical work table provides a useful surface and storage in a hallway, home office, or living space. The walnut construction displays a fine colour and patination across the surfaces, grain, and turned components.

Originating in 19th-century commercial textile shops, drapers tables were designed as wide, flat surfaces for measuring and cutting rolls of fabric. They frequently incorporated shallow frieze drawers to store shears, tape measures, and trade record books.

These tables were typically built using regional European hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or cherry. Construction involved mortise and tenon joinery, hand-turned legs, and dovetailed drawer boxes built to endure heavy commercial use.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural age, including uneven wear across the working surface, hand-cut dovetail joints, oxidation around original metal lock plates, and irregular underside tool marks left by hand planes.

A drapers table functions effectively as a substantial console table in a wide hallway, a freestanding kitchen island, or a sideboard behind a living room sofa, providing both surface display area and concealed storage.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and maintain the patina. Avoid direct exposure to heat sources or prolonged moisture, and dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
