Antique Victorian Marquetry Inlaid Tilt Top Centre Table / C.1870

19th century
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

This striking antique table features an oval veneered top displaying a wonderfully figured grain, enhanced with delicate decorative inlay and marquetry motifs. An intricate central ornament is complemented by smaller decorative motifs positioned around the top, together with fine line inlay following its oval form.

The table stands on an impressive dark stained pedestal base incorporating turned supports and four elegantly shaped and carved legs. The contrast between the lighter figured top and darker base gives the piece a particularly distinctive appearance.

A traditional tilt top mechanism allows the tabletop to be raised into a vertical position when not in use a practical feature originally designed to allow tables of this type to be stored against a wall while also displaying their decorative tops.

A wonderful statement piece with genuine Victorian character, suitable as a centre table, occasional table, side table or decorative feature within a period, traditional or eclectic interior.

The table is presented in very good antique condition for its age, remaining an attractive and usable piece. There are various age-related marks, scratches, areas of wear, small losses and imperfections to the top and finish, consistent with a piece of this age and clearly visible in the photographs.

This Victorian centre table dates from around 1870 in the English Country House style. The piece comprises an oval veneered top in warm brown walnut with a figured grain, decorated with delicate boxwood marquetry medallions in the centre and around the perimeter, along with fine line inlay and dark metal tilt-top hinges. The dark-stained pedestal base incorporates turned vertical supports and four carved quadruped legs with shaped scroll feet, creating a striking two-tone contrast with the lighter top. Age-related surface marks, scratches, small losses, and imperfections to the wood finish reflect its long history. The item stands 70 cm high, 104 cm wide, and 72 cm deep. In a contemporary home, the table functions effectively as an occasional table, side table, or statement display piece in a traditional, period, or eclectic interior. The integrated tilt-top mechanism permits the surface to lift into a vertical position for compact storage against a wall or to showcase the decorative inlay when not in everyday use.

A Victorian tilt-top centre table is a circular or oval table designed to sit in the middle of a room, featuring a hinged top mechanism. The mechanism allows the tabletop to pivot vertically onto its pedestal base, enabling easier storage or placement flat against a wall when not in use.

These tables were commonly crafted from native or imported hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. The decorative marquetry inlay utilised contrasting light and dark woods, including boxwood, ebony, and fruitwoods, to create intricate floral or geometric patterns.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-cut marquetry veneers with subtle variations in thickness, hand-carved pedestal bases, and brass catch mechanisms beneath the tabletop. Examining the underside reveals solid timber construction, period screws, and age-related shrinkage in the wood grain.

A centre table functions well as an entryway focal point, a breakfast table, or an occasional library table. Pairing the rich warm wood and intricate inlay with neutral wall paint and contemporary lighting creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the table away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent wood movement, veneer lifting, or fading. Dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax polish annually to protect the surface and retain the natural timber lustre.
